Get Low – Movie Review

In an earlier post, I told you that I would be making some book recommendations. These recommendations are not necessarily for recent books, but all of them will be books that I have read and strongly endorse. As I mentioned there, this is in keeping with my motto, “It’s not for me. It’s all for you.” I was looking at a list of movies today and decided that I would add a movie recommendation to this site as well. I have no criteria other than I will only write about movies that I really think more people should see.

In the case of this first recommendation, it is for an excellent movie that did not get all of the press and audience that it deserved when it hit the theaters. There are no car chases, no explosions, no gratuitous or even non-gratuitous sex and no teenage angst. Clearly, this is a movie that was never going to become a blockbuster. It does, however, have a stellar set of actors led by Robert Duvall, Sissy Spacek, Bill Murray, and a talented supporting cast. The story is a simple one about a man who sentences himself to a life of solitude in the Tennessee hills as punishment for something that happened in his youth. He decides to make things right before he passes from this earth and wants to host his own funeral while he is still alive. Duvall is cast as the hermit and if you have any appreciation for fine acting, the movie is worth your time just for the time he is on-screen. Sissy Spacek portrays an old flame of Duvall’s character. It is insufficient to say that Bill Murray provides comic relief as the undertaker that Duvall approaches to arrange his funeral. “Comic relief” is the moronic sidekick in those other movies. Bill Murray adds humor to the movie without just being silly (not that there is anything wrong with silly – I am personally a fan of silly).

You will find the Amazon.com link below if you want to pick up a copy for yourself. Get it for the next evening where you feel like some entertainment for adults. I was going to say when you feel like some adult entertainment, but that would not send the right message. On the other hand, if they had used that phrase in marketing this movie, it might have become a blockbuster after all.
